Wintry Showers In The East
Added : Tue 9 February : 06:49 BST

An east-west split is on the cards for today as moderate north-easterly winds blow wintry showers into eastern areas whilst sheltered western districts will be mostly dry with good sunny spells.

High pressure is centred close to north-western Scotland and low pressure is over the western Mediterranean which is why the winds are coming in from a chilly north-easterly direction. These winds are picking up moisture off the North Sea, and this means wintry showers will affect many eastern areas. Rain, hail, sleet and snow are all possible, and there may be a slight covering of snow deposited from some of the heavier showers.

However, if you are across central and western areas of Britain and Ireland today, it will be a mainly dry day with much more in the way of sunshine around. The odd wintry flurry may pop up, but this will be the exception rather than the rule. Despite the sunshine it will be cold everywhere, especially in the east with those showers and northeast winds. A widespread frost will quickly form tonight in many parts, and where the showers have fallen icy surfaces can be expected. The wintry showers will continue towards the east, and again some could be quite heavy giving a dusting of snow in places by Wednesday morning.

Further sleet and snow showers are expected across the east and southeast of England on Wednesday, with some heavy ones possible at times, giving some slight accumulations in places. Many other parts will remain dry, bright and chilly with frost morning and night, and just the odd wintry flurry about.

 Light Snow In Places
Added : Mon 8 February : 06:36 BST

Ever colder air will continue to feed in from the east today on the moderate north-easterly winds that will continue to blow. For many parts it will be another cloudy day, and there will be a little snow around in places too.

The main risk of snow today comes across southern and eastern areas of England as outbreaks of light rain or drizzle break out from time to time. As upper air temperatures continue to fall, sleet and snow is expected to become more of a feature, although no notable accumulations are expected at this stage. There will also be a few wintry showers over northern and eastern Britain, but for much of the rest of Britain and Ireland it will be a dry day with a few bright or sunny spells coming through. It will be cold everywhere, especially if you are out in the wind, with temperatures generally just below normal for the time of year.

Any wintry showers will tend to die out tonight, and with more in the way of clear spells developing, we are expecting a widespread frost to form. This will result in icy conditions forming where the showers today have fallen, and is worth bearing in mind if you are travelling later tonight or tomorrow morning.

Tuesday will be another cold day, but there should be some sunny spells around in many areas. The north-easterly winds will blow in some wintry showers towards the east, especially across north-eastern England where some accumulation may occur. Another frost on Tuesday night will take us into a cold day on Wednesday, and there is the risk of some heavier snowfall breaking out across eastern Britain - more on this tomorrow!
