Plenty going on with the weather today as a frontal wave develops on an active system that's currently pushing eastwards across the country. This feature will bring some very wet weather in places and the risk of gales around exposed coasts in the southeast for a time.
It's an unsettled start to the day for many regions with showers or longer spells of rain pushing in from the west but the main focus is on this feature that's crossing England and Wales as it is bringing some locally torrential downpours and gusty winds along with some hail and thunder in places too. This will continue to track eastwards, bringing some potentially problematic conditions to some areas before eventually clearing out into the North Sea later on. With those downpours falling onto saturated ground then there will again be a risk of localised flooding and some very gusty winds may bring some issues too.
Away from this feature and for most places it will be a day of sunny spells and scattered showers, the showers always heaviest and most frequent towards the north and west whilst over the hills and mountains they will turn wintry as colder air moves in. The change in air masses means that it will be a colder day for many places with temperatures ranging from 4°C to 6°C in the north and west to 7°C to 9°C across the south and east so not far from average but feeling colder due to the recent mildness.
Rain and showers will gradually ease back towards western coasts tonight and as drier and clearer spells develop elsewhere with winds easing so it will turn cold with some frost and ice forming. Tomorrow is then set to be another day of showers, some of the showers heavy at times and wintry over higher ground, but there will be some sunny spells around too.
