Storm Barra is set to make the headlines over the next day or so as it moves in from the west bringing heavy rain or snow to many regions along with strong and gusty winds. Southern and western parts of Ireland are likely to bear the brunt of Barra later today and tonight as damaging winds develop here bringing gusts in excess of 80 MPH in exposed spots.
For much of the mainland UK it is a cold and frosty start to Tuesday but cloud and wind is already starting to increase from the west with rain and gales affecting many parts of Ireland along with snow for higher spots. So after a cold, bright start across central and eastern regions, a band of wet and very windy weather will make its way in from the west, pushing in across Northern Ireland, Wales and southwest England during the morning and reaching much of the rest of the UK by the end of the day although northeast Scotland and easternmost parts of England may well stay dry throughout daylight hours. As that rain meets the colder air in place across central and northern Britain so it is likely to turn to snow over higher ground from the Pennines northwards with some heavy falls over the higher peaks where strong winds will bring the risk of blizzards and drifting snow making for some atrocious conditions in places later on today.
Brighter conditions will then follow the rain band from the southwest but blustery showers will soon develop with severe gales developing across Ireland, gusting 70-80MPH in exposed spots and perhaps locally higher bringing the risk of damage and disruption. Temperatures will turn milder in the southwest, but they will be pretty academic in the wind and rain with many regions feeling cold.
Severe gales continue towards the southwest tonight with squally showers as the rain and snow continues to push north and east and this takes us into a showery and unsettled day again tomorrow as Barra slowly fills over the country with the strongest winds gradually easing.
