Low pressure over the near continent is bringing some heavy rain and thunderstorms across some southern counties of England and Wales first thing this morning as a frontal system pushes westwards. This front is likely to become slow-moving close to the south and southwest during the next day or two before slowly pushing northwards as we head into the Bank Holiday weekend.
So it is a wet start for parts of the south and southwest of England along with south Wales and across into Ireland but it is mainly dry elsewhere to start with although low cloud pushing in from the east is bringing some patchy drizzle in places. This low cloud will gradually thin and break up as we go through the day to leave many areas with some warm sunny spells although eastern and north-eastern coastal regions may well remain rather grey.
Meanwhile, the early rain and any thundery activity across the south will push north-westwards to affect parts of Ireland this morning with further showers potentially affecting central and southern parts of England along with south Wales before tending to ease later on as they move away to the west. However, as skies brighten and temperatures pick up so we are expecting some thunderstorms to develop in places this afternoon with parts of East Anglia, the Midlands and Wales at greatest risk although they will be hit-and-miss affairs.
There will be a range of temperatures across the country today with values ranging from 10°C or 11°C under the grey skies along eastern coasts with the onshore wind, 14°C to 16°C under the cloud and rain in the south and southwest, to highs of 19°C to 22°C in the best of the sunny spells this afternoon across parts of the Midlands, northwest England and towards western Scotland.
Those temperatures could help set off a few scattered heavy showers across central regions of England this evening, these drifting westwards tonight so for parts of the south and southwest it remains cloudy with further showery rain at times. For most places though it will be a mostly dry night with low cloud in the east becoming more extensive. This means a grey start to tomorrow for many places with skies in the north slowly brightening but for central and southern regions there will continue to be a lot of cloud with some further showery outbreaks of rain which may turn heavy and persistent at times.
