Low pressure off the coast of southwest Ireland dominates the weather today as bands of showers and rain continue to circulate around this system and, with cold air still lurking in the north, then there will be some significant snowfall developing across higher parts of central and eastern Scotland during the next 24 hours or so.
It's a very messy picture out there this morning with temperatures across northern Britain below freezing whilst values across southern England are into double figures as that mild air slowly makes inroads. Outbreaks of rain and showers are continuing to push up from the south and for higher parts of northern England and southern Scotland snow continues to pose some issues this morning before this snow risk extends across many eastern parts of Scotland during today, much of the significant snow falling over higher ground above 150m or so with rain at lower levels.
The far north and west will remain bright and chilly with some wintry showers whilst rain in the south will tend to be more showery in nature although there will be some locally heavy showers around with limited brighter spells, perhaps more in the way of sunny spells developing across parts of southeast England for a time before further heavy showers move in here later.
There will again be a wide range of temperatures across the country, values ranging from close to or just above freezing across much of central and northern Scotland, where strong winds will make it feel even colder, to highs of 10°C to 12°C across England and Wales where winds will be lighter.
Rain and snow will continue across many parts of eastern Scotland tonight with further significant accumulations across the hills and mountains. Elsewhere and whilst showers will continue, they will tend to ease with some drier spells developing in many areas. Tomorrow sees rain and snow becoming confined to the far north of Scotland and the Northern Isles. It will be some what drier and brighter elsewhere but there will still be some showers around, especially in the west and southwest where they could be heavy at times.
